Your Weekly Handsome Mustache: Rudy Butler in the Getaway

Forget Steve McQueen. He’s a just a handsome man with a loaded gun. It’s all about Rudy Butler and his show-stealing moves in the 1972 film “The Getaway.”

This movie has all my favorite things: a stunning Ali McGraw – who falls in love and leaves her husband for Steve McQueen while the movie was being made; hysterical antics; vintage old cars and Al Lettieri and his bloated whale of mustache.

Lettieri played Virgil “The Turk” Sollozzo in the Godfather. The story goes Lettieri’s family had ties to the mafia and he actually had to ask permission before accepting the role in the film. Here’s Lettieri with Al Pacino at his home in New Jersey.

There’s another Godfather-to-Getaway connection involving cats. Yes, cats. Hey, I find it amusing when big men hold furry animals. Remember this scene:

And here’s Al Lettieri stroking his pussy cat with a young Sally Struthers (at 7:39). I do want to warn you that in this segment of the movie, Steve McQueen smacks Ali McGraw up – it’s an interesting social commentary about the role of women at the time. In the remake from 1994, with Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin, SHE smacks him up. I’m not sure if that’s a measure of our progress or not. Personally no one should smacking anyone unless it’s after hours and in the dark:
